So summer is officially in full swing, especially where I am in the UK, we are having somewhat of a heatwave. So I thought I would recommend my favourite summery reads! These are in no particular order.
Title(s) Saint Anything & Just Listen | Author: Sarah Dessen
I think anything by this author is perfect for summer. I always love the locations Sarah picks for her books. As someone who had read about 80% of her published works, she has yet to disappoint! Two standouts for me are Just Listen and her newest release Saint Anything. What I love about Sarahs storytelling is that it always features the importance of friendship, speaking up for yourself & family. What you read will always feel genuine.
Saint Anything follows Sydney who has always felt like the outsider in the family, her older brother Peyton has always been the star and holder of their parents attention, but now their concern. As Peytons behaviour starts getting increasingly reckless and gets him into some serious trouble, once again Sydney is left to herself. This is the story of her self discovery.
Just Listen follows Annabel who is the girl who used to have everything, used to be popular and was once in a well-known brands television commercial. But everything takes a turn for the worst when her best friend drops her and starts spreading rumours about her & her sister is suffering with anorexia, she isolates herself. Thats until Owen enters the scene, with his love for music and problems of his own, starts to help Annabel figure her problems out. You get a lot of back story in this novel which I think is great, it really helps to understand everything that this character went through and how she is currently feeling. This book isn’t just a love story. Music plays a big part in this book which I thought added a cool element to the novel.
Title: Rebel Belle | Author: Rachel Hawkins
Rebel Belle was a very unique book to me, I read it a few years ago now, but the memory of it has stuck with me, I remember half reading this and half listening to it on audiobook. Its set in a country landscape. With a funny and eccentric set of characters who you can easily connect to. The story follows Harper, who is a southern girl with a sassy and hilarious attitude. The book also features fantasy/paranormal elements, who says a book just has to be contemporary to be summery?
Title: The Selection series | Author: Kiera Cass
You’ve likely seen this series around somewhere, its very much a love it/hate it kind of series. For me I appreciate it for what it is, a mixture of the TV show The Batchelor & the Capitol ‘Hunger Games’ interview show from The Hunger Games. This series for me was very addictive, I practically flew through them. I do think they are worth the read though, they are full of fun and amusing drama set in a dystopian universe, following America Singer through the ‘Selection’ process to find the next princess of Illéa.
