Thank you to NetGalley & Harper Voyager UK for this book in exchange for an honest review
After reading Illuminae last year (and LOVED it) I was interested to hear about anything else this author would be writing.
After the announcement of Nevernight and learning that it is novel about revenge and a school of assassins my first thought was *YES PLEASE*.
The Shadows Love her. And they drink her fear.
This book is dark, full of blood, gore & cursing and its excellent.
What stood out for me with this book is the unique writing style, it was beautiful.
The Main character Mia, watched her father get hanged at the age of ten and had everyone she loved taken away from her and she herself also got sent to die (but she survived).
After all this she turned out to be incredibly BADASS.
Mia becomes an assassin to avenge her family, she is a vulnerable character but is extremely determined and not to be messed with, combined with the rich world building of Itreya inspired by Ancient Rome/Venice equals genius.
Then we have Mr Kindly, Mia’s shadow cat (yes thats right!) who is like her companion – and weapon who is quite frankly the coolest. We learn that ‘Nevernight’ in this world you never get night, because it has three suns which are all different and give off various types of light.
Another unique thing with this book was the use of asterisks footnotes so you could gain more knowledge about the world, which I think was pretty darn cool.
I think this book had just the right mix of action and political intrigue, which personally I think is hard to get right from what I have read in the past.
Can we just talk about the UK cover for 2 seconds?
I mean, HOW STUNNING?
Everyone needs to add this to their TBR’s immediately.
Bring on the next book!
